Priceless old photos show how the Japanese lived in the 1890s

Photography in Japan was presented in the mid-19th century, when for the first time in many centuries the country was open to western trade and foreign travelers. Shortly after the Meiji period began, new technologies and inventions appeared in the state. All this led to rapid and impressive changes in the second half of the century.

The identity of the photographer who took these pictures in Japan in the 1890s has not been established. Photos are stored in one of the New York Public Library albums. Among them you can find both staged scenes of home life, and majestic landscapes of breathtaking beauty.
