350 thousand cars: where do Volkswagen cemeteries come from in the USA

In 2015, the biggest car scandal erupted: it turned out that Volkswagen was dishonest with its customers. The giant, which produces brands such as Audi, Volkswagen, Škoda, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, trying to gain market leadership, produced cars with diesel engines, whose emissions into the atmosphere were many times higher than the norm. For this, the concern equipped more than 11 million auto software, which, when conducting tests, underestimated the levels of harmful gas production. Cars were produced from 2008 to 2015, until a scandal broke out, which was called the dieselgate.

The scandal cost the company, according to rough estimates, $ 25 billion, of course, Volkswagen's reputation also suffered. In the United States alone, the concern bought more than three hundred thousand diesel cars. All of them today are in specially equipped parking lots in different states of America. They were nicknamed "Volkswagen Cemeteries." In total there are 37 such sites, the largest of which is located in the California desert.

Here cars are closely monitored and even regularly conducted maintenance. True, all the same, they periodically try to rob the storages: for example, only last year about a hundred cars were stolen from the “cemeteries”. They were later tracked to the market. Moreover, cars were sold not only directly as used, but there were cars even in car dealerships.

Recently it turned out that Volkswagen plans to sell cars that almost destroyed the company. However, it is still unclear exactly how the sales will take place: the concern is likely to invest in new software. But there is another option: these diesel cars will be sold in foreign markets.
