Mountain gorillas from Rwanda: there are very few of these amazing animals

Virunga Volcanoes National Park, located on the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is home to rare black mountain gorillas.

To protect them from poachers, in 1925 the state took over the protection of that part of the park where they live.

So in Africa, the first protected natural area appeared, and the black mountain gorillas became the hallmark of Rwanda.

In total, about 650 individuals of these wonderful animals remained in the world, and half of them are in Virung.

Among primates, this subspecies is considered one of the largest. Adult males weigh about 195 kilograms on average, and their height is 1.5 meters.

Due to their long, thick fur, mountain gorillas are able to survive in places with a cool climate.

Gorillas are herbivores, almost their entire diet consists of leaves, stems and shoots of plants. In addition, they can enjoy the roots, bark of trees, as well as insect larvae or snails.

The daily rate of consumption of vegetation in males is almost double that of females and reaches 34 kilograms, while females are able to eat a maximum of 18 kilograms.

Rangers work on the territory of the National Park, whose task is to protect mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas, like all other members of the genus, have dark brown eyes framed by black rings.

Volcano National Park is a well-known center for local eco-tourism, where visitors regularly organize trips to observe mountain gorillas or visit the mountain range of volcanoes, climbing on which you can enjoy amazingly beautiful scenery. And local dancers will always be happy to entertain travelers.

Near the park you can see local farmers at work.
